Green Build: Charlestown Waterfront Property
Construction began Spring 2010
Located less than a hundred yards away from the waters edge
in Charlestown, Rhode Island, this beach house is in prime location for views
of the water and coast. Originally a teardown, Native Structures was able to
start from scratch at this location. Keeping in mind the fact that this home
was so close to the water, it was built from the ground up with environmental
respect in mind. This single-family home is built on concrete piers to avoid
water damage to the foundation. 30 % fly ash was used in the concrete, making
the concrete stronger while recycling coal ash that may otherwise be released
into the atmosphere. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood was also
used in this home, as interior studs, stairs, and exterior porches. The Smart
Shell insulation system was used in the construction of this home, complete
with spray foam insulation. The windows are also environmentally sound as they
have solar protection within the glass. The green building aspects of this home
are numerous and continue to be incorporated into the structure as the building
comes to completion mid-summer 2010.
